Maasi Krishnapaksha Chaturthi (14th day of the waning moon phase in the month of Maasi) is celebrated as Maha Shivaratri. On this day, devotees stay awake the whole day and the entire night and perform special prayers. Prayers are held at four times through the night for Lord Shivan. This night is immensely extolled in the ancient scriptures, including the Puranams and the Itihasams. Shivaratri worship brings about tremendous spiritual benefits and divine blessings.
