அபிஷேகம்  என்பது உரிய திரவியங்களைக் கொண்டு (பொருட்களை) இறை திருமேனிகளை புனித நீராட்டுதல் என்று பொருள் படும். அபிஷேகப் பொருள்களை ஒரு குறிப்பிட்ட வரிசையில் செய்வது முறையாகும். சிற்சில மாற்றங்களுடன் சிறப்பாக உலகெங்கும் கோயில்களில் செய்யப்படுகிறது தெய்வங்களுக்கு ஏற்றவாறு சில பொருட்களை நீக்கியும், சில பொருட்களை சேர்த்தும் செய்வது வழக்கமாகும். ஒவ்வொரு அபிஷேகப் பொருள்களும் ஒவ்வொரு சிறப்பு பலன் களைத் தருகின்றன என்பது சாஸ்திரம் கூறுகின்றது.
