இறந்தவரின் ஆத்மா சாந்தி அடைய வேண்டி சிவனுடைய சன்னிதியில் உறவினர்கள் நண்பர்களுடன் கூடிச்செய்யும் கூட்டு வழிபாடும் இறங்கல் தெரிவத்தலும் சேர்ந்தது "ஆத்மசாந்தி வழிபாடாகும்".  இவ்வழிபாடு இறந்தவரின் 16ஆம் நாள் மோ க்ஷ தீப வழிபாடாக "விளக்குப்பர்த்தல்" என்ற பெயரில் செய்யப்படுகிறது.ஒவ்வொரு ஜீவனும் உஷ்னமும் பிரகாசமும் உடைய தீபச் சுடர் வடிவில் உருவகப்படுத்த படுவதால் அந்த ஜீவன் ஆத்மா இறைவனின் சன்னிதானத்தில் அடைந்ததாக பாவித்து இந்த வழிபாடு செய்யப்படுகிறது.பிறகு குலமரபின் படி சடங்குகளும் பிரார்த்தனைகளும் முடிந்து அனைவருக்கும் உணவளிக்கப்படும். இதனைத்தவிர ஒவ்வொரு  மாத திதியிலும்   ஆத்மசாந்தி செய்யப்படுகிறது. 30 வது நாள் சிறப்பாக செய்யும் வழக்கமும் உண்டு.

தலை தெவசமாகிய முதல் தெவசம் முடிந்தும் ஆத்மசாந்தி பூஜை சிறப்பாக கடைபிடிக்கப்பட்டு வருகிறது. இச்சமயம் காய்கறிகளும் உணவுப்பொருட்களும் படைக்க படும் வழக்கம் உண்டு.

Athmashanti is the prayers performed by the relatives of the deceased for the dear departed at Shiva’s sanctum. It is also an occasion for relatives and friends to express condolence. This prayer is conducted on the 16th day following the death. It is observed in the form of Mokshadeepam or sighting of the lamp. Every life is deemed as a warm and bright light. Hence, this ritual is carried out to symbolise the departed soul reaching the sanctum of God. It will then be followed by rites and rituals specific to the community and then by a meal. Apart from this, Atmashanthi is also observed every month according to the Thithi of the deceased. Some even observe this on the 30th day following the death. Atmashanthi is also conducted on the first death anniversary with offerings of food, fruits and vegetables for the departed.
