பக்தர்கள் அவர் அவர்களுடைய குலம், கோத்திரத்தில் பிறந்த அனைத்து முன்னோர்களின் திருப்திக்காகவும், சந்ததி இல்லாதவர்கள், சன்னியாசம் பெற்று மறைந்தவர்கள், ஆயுதங்களால் போரிலும், விபத்திலும் இறந்தவர்கள் முறையான ஈமச்சடங்குகள் கிடைக்கப் பெறாத நம் குல முன்னோர்களுக்காகவும், மற்றவர்களுக்காகவும் செய்யப்படுகிறது. புரட்டாசி மாத அமாவாசைக்கு 15 நாட்கள்(ஒரு பக்ஷம்)முன் தொடங்கி அமாவாசை அன்று வரையும் செய்யப்படும். இந்த அமாவாசை மஹாயள அமாவாசையாக புனிதமாக கடைபிடிக்கப் பெற்று வருகிறது.

Mahalaya Amavasai is a day for honouring all ancestors including those who did not have any children, those who became sannyasis (ascetics) and those who perished in war or accidents and could not be properly cremated or buried. It is observed from 15 days before Amavasai (new moon day) in Purattasi up to Amavasai. This Amavasai is revered as Mahalaya Amavasai.
